Definition
Over-pronation, or flat feet, is a common biomechanical problem that occurs in the walking process when a person’s arch collapses upon weight bearing. This motion can cause extreme stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, potentially causing severe discomfort and leading to other foot problems.
Cause
Over-pronation is very prominent in people who have flexible, flat feet. The framework of the foot begins to collapse, causing the foot to flatten and adding stress to other parts of the foot. As a result, over-pronation, often leads to Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, Metatarsalgia, Post-tib Tendonitis and/or Bunions.
There are many causes of flat feet. Obesity, pregnancy or repetitive pounding on a hard surface can weaken the arch leading to over-pronation. Often people with flat feet do not experience discomfort immediately, and some never suffer from any discomfort at all. However, when symptoms develop and become painful, walking becomes awkward and causes increased strain on the feet and calves.
Treatment and Prevention
Over-Pronation can be treated conservatively (non-surgical treatments) with over-the-counter orthotics.
These orthotics should be designed with appropriate arch support and medial rearfoot posting to prevent the over-pronation.
Footwear should also be examined to ensure there is a proper fit. Footwear with a firm heel counter is often recommended for extra support and stability. Improperly fitting footwear can lead to additional foot problems.

comments: It has been very difficult to find shoes for my 99 year old mother whose feet are very wide, with one foot partially deformed. Prior to visiting Comfort & Wide Shoes, family members have only been able to find men’s slippers to fit her but which are unattractive and inappropriate for use out of doors. After visiting two San Diego specialty shoe stores that could only offer unattractive men’s oxfords that would be difficult for Mother to put on and take off, due to her limited maneuverability, we visited Comfort & Wide Shoes, having found their name through Google. It was with little hope of finding something suitable that we arrived at the store. We were assisted by Lindsey, who patiently provided a selection of shoes to consider. We found a very suitable pair of sandals with adjustable straps that met the approval of my mother. We were extremely impressed by Lindsey’s knowledge, professionalism and PATIENCE. To say that my brother and I were happy and thankful for her outstanding service would be an understatement.

Yesterday a woman walked in the store, and she was very pessimistic. The first thing she said is that I bet you will not be able to find me shoes. The reason why was that she had Hammer Toe, Neuropathy, and Plantar Fasciitis. These issues made her feet very tender. An hour later we had turned her frown right upside down. Lacing Tips
According to the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, certain lacing techniques for shoes can prevent injuries, alleviate pain, and relieve foot problems. In general, these specialists recommend loosening the laces as the shoes are being slipped on and to begin lacing at the eyelets closest to the toes and then pulling the laces of one set of eyelets at a time to tighten for a more comfortable fit.
Heels Slip:
1. Thread the left lace down through the top-left eyelet, form a loop between the top and second eyelets.
2. Thread the right lace down through the top-right eyelet, forming a loop between the top and second eyelets.
3. Cross the laces by threading each lace through its opposite loop. Pull the laces and tie normally, securing the lace lock to complete.
High Arch:
1. Lace each shoelace side down through its respective bottom eyelet.
2. Thread right lace up through second-bottom-right eyelet, across and down through the second-bottom-left eyelet.
3. Skip an eyelet, thread the right lace up through the next eyelet, then across and down through the opposite eyelet. Repeat.
4. Thread the lace up through the top-right eyelet.
5. Skipping and eyelet, thread the left lace up through the next eyelet, then across and down through the opposite eyelet. Repeat this step. Then thread the lace up through the top-left eyelet to complete.
Toe Discomfort:
1. Thread one side of the lace down through the top-right eyelet.
2. Thread the lace up through the bottom-left eyelet—at the toe box part of the shoe.
3. Thread the lace down through the bottom-right eyelet.
4. Thread the lace across and up through the second-bottom-left eyelet.
5. Thread the lace across and down through the second-bottom-right eyelet, being sure to thread the lace over the first toe box lacing. Continue until completely laced.
Wide Forefoot with Narrow Heel:
1. Separate the lacing into two sections—bottom and top—using two sets of short shoelaces. Lace the bottom three eyelets with one shoelace. Lace the top eyelets with the second shoelace. For a good heel fit with no slippage, use the “lace lock” technique at the top.
Why High Heels Can Ruin Your Health
Did you know that you teeter on high heels? High heels may appeal to the eye, but can cause problems over time. Walking in high heels gradually shortens the Achilles tendon. This is because over time, when you take off the shoes it pulls on the calcaneus(heel bone). This place you at a greater risk of plantar fasciitis, a painful condition resulting from inflammation of a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Adding to the problem, the fat pads of the feet naturally diminish with age, and walking in high heels only worsens the situation. Instead change into flats when you get home and reduce the length of time you’re in heels; walk barefoot when you can.

Do You Have Toenail Fungus?
Definition
Toenail fungus, known by physicians as Onychomycosis, affects about half of Americans by the age of 70. It is relatively rare in children, but the incidence increases with age. Fungus infections occur when microscopic fungi gain entry through a small trauma in the nail, then grow and spread in the warm, moist environment inside the patient’s socks and shoes.
Symptoms of toenail fungus, which can be caused by several types of fungi, include swelling, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of the nail, streaks or spots down the side of the nail, and even complete loss of the nail. Toenail color can vary from brown or yellow to white with this condition.
Fungal infections can affect the fingernails as well as the toenails, but toenail fungus is more difficult to treat because toenails grow more slowly. It occurs most often on the big or small toe, but might occur on any toe.
Cause
Toenail fungus can be picked up in damp areas such as public gyms, shower stalls or swimming pools, and can be passed among family members. Athletes and people who wear tight-fitting shoes or tight hosiery that cause trauma to the toes or keep the feet from drying out are at higher risk. The condition can also spread from one toe to another, or to other parts of the body.
Other risk factors include abnormal PH level of the skin, not drying off the feet thoroughly after bathing or exercise, and a compromised immune system in someone who has been exposed to a fungus. Diabetics have an increased risk of contracting a toenail fungus because their immune system is compromised. They should have their nails cut and debrided by a podiatrist.
Treatment and Prevention
Because it is difficult to treat or eradicate toenail fungus, it is a good idea to try to prevent it. It helps to wear protective shoes or sandals in public showers, pool areas and gyms, and to avoid borrowing someone else�s shoes or sharing socks or towels with someone who has toenail fungus. An orthotic device can be used to add cushioning and/or control over-pronation, support the longitudinal arch, and reduce stress on the lower leg muscles.
Wash your feet regularly, and dry them thoroughly when they get wet. Wearing nail polish on the toes is not advised because it can seal in fungus and allow it to grow. Keep toenails trimmed, and be sure to disinfect any pedicure tools before using them.
If you do develop toenail fungus, see your foot doctor. The doctor might remove as much of the nail as possible by trimming, filing or dissolving it. Medicated nail polish might be prescribed for a localized infection, but a serious infection will likely be treated with a prescription oral antifungal medication. These medications can have side effects, so be sure to work closely with your doctor on your treatment plan. Only in severe cases will surgical removal of the nail be recommended.
